The Surprising Science Behind Muscle Testing


Have you ever had a gut feeling about something before you could explain why? A tightening in your chest when a decision felt wrong, or a sense of ease when it felt right?

That's not just a metaphor. It's biology. And it's the foundation of one of the most fascinating tools I use with clients every week: muscle testing.

A little throwback...


Muscle testing (sometimes called muscle monitoring) wasn't dreamed up in a lab. It was discovered almost by accident in 1964, by a Michigan chiropractor named Dr George Goodheart. While working with a patient whose shoulder muscle wasn't firing properly, Goodheart noticed something odd: certain points on the body, when pressed or

stimulated, changed how strongly a muscle could hold its position. He kept testing, kept observing, and kept finding patterns. What started as one clinical curiosity turned into an entire field, now known as Applied Kinesiology, used today by chiropractors, dentists, and holistic practitioners around the world.


At its heart, Goodheart had stumbled onto something profound: muscles aren't just about strength. They're wired directly into the nervous system, and the nervous system is in constant conversation with everything happening in the body, including the parts we're not consciously aware of.


So How Does It Actually Work?


Here's the simplest way I can explain it. When I gently test a muscle, I'm not checking how strong you are. I'm checking how clearly that muscle can communicate with your nervous system in that moment. A muscle that "unlocks" or goes weak under light pressure isn't a sign of physical weakness. It's feedback. It's your body's way of saying "there's static on the line here" - whether that static is a stressed organ, an old emotional pattern, or a belief running quietly in the background.

This is where it gets really interesting. Cell biologist Dr Bruce Lipton has spent decades researching how much of our behaviour, health, and even our physical responses are driven not by our conscious mind, but by our subconscious mind - the part of us running the show up to 95% of the time.


Lipton's work helped explain scientifically what practitioners like Goodheart had already discovered through observation: the body keeps a kind of record. It responds honestly to stimuli - words, memories, beliefs - often before the conscious, thinking mind even catches up.


Muscle testing simply gives us a window into that response. It's a way of asking the subconscious mind a question and letting the body answer, instead of relying on the conscious mind, which is brilliant at rationalising, editing, and sometimes talking us out of what we already know.


Is It Valid?


I understand the scepticism, and honestly, I welcome it. Muscle testing isn't magic, and it isn't about "proving" anything with theatrics. Used well, it's a structured, repeatable way of listening to the nervous system's stress response, something practitioners have refined and cross-checked for over 100 years. Like any skill, its accuracy depends on the practitioner's training, calibration, and integrity.

In my sessions, I use it as one tool among several, always checked, always in service of getting real, useful information.


The Real Takeaway


What I find most beautiful about muscle testing is what it represents: your body has never stopped talking to you. It's been communicating all along, through tension, energy, and yes, through the strength of a muscle under gentle pressure. Our work together is simply learning to listen.
